When you are thinking of enjoying your own backyard pool, then you are likely thinking of size, spacing, features and safety. While these are certainly important things to consider, another thing that should be on your mind is how you will keep your pool water safe and clean. There are basically two options when it comes to pool treatments: salt water pools and standard chlorine pools. Each is going to have their advantages, although chlorine pools are more well-known. We at Greenville Pools wanted to take the chance to answer some common questions about salt water pools here:
- Will my pool taste/smell/feel salty? It is highly unlikely. The salt concentration of salt water pools is about 1/100th of the salt concentration of the sea.
- How do salt water pools stay clean? Salt water pools stay clean by utilizing a specialized generator that converts table salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine. With standard chlorine pools and salt water pools, the water is still being cleaned by chlorine, just in a different way.
- Will salt water pools keep light hair from turning green? They can help, but you will still need to take preventative measures to ensure your light hair doesn’t take on a greenish hue.
- Which is less expensive, salt water pools or chlorine pools? Chlorinated pools are less expensive upon install, but can be more expensive over time. The operating costs of salt water pools are generally lower and help to offset the pricier install.
