When adding a new pool to your property, you typically have two options for the cleaning system for your pool water: salt or chlorine. Each one offers its own list of pros and cons, and both are great options for your pool water. Here is a list of the key differences between salt water pools and chlorine pools to help you decide which might be best for you.

Salt Water Pools vs. Chlorine Pools: Key Differences You Need to Know

  • Chlorine levels: The most obvious difference between salt water pools and chlorine pools is the chlorine level. Contrary to the common misconception, salt water pools still use chlorine to sanitize and stabilize your pool water, but the chlorine is created through electrolysis of salt rather than relying on harsh chloramines. The difference in chlorine levels makes the salt water pool gentler on your skin and eyes than the traditional chlorine pool.
  • Costs: Chlorine pools tend to cost less upfront than salt water pools because they don’t require all the specialized equipment to sanitize the pool. However, salt water pools can cost less in the long run because of lower maintenance requirements.
  • Sanitization: When it comes to the effectiveness of sanitization for the pool water, both chlorine and salt water pools are about the same. Though they use different methods to achieve the chlorination and sanitization of the pool, you can trust that both types of pools will be fully sanitized and safe to swim in when properly maintained.
