- Let the landscape be your guide in designing. When it comes to your pool, the landscape will need to be factored in. A pool can go almost anywhere on a flat yard, but if your yard has any kind of slope, then you will need to figure out how to level the property first.
- Don’t forget to add visual interest. Custom pools are what you make them, so choose to make yours stand out with some visual interest. This can be done with lighting, rock features, waterfalls, landscaping, etc.
- Choose a pool that works for your style. Think about what type of swimmer you are before designing your pool. Pools for lap swimming and pools for kids look and perform very differently.
- Consider the extra features that will make your pool unique. With custom pools, the sky is the limit! Think about adding a tanning ledge, swim-up bar, in-pool spa, feature lighting, waterfalls, etc. for truly custom pools.
- Don’t neglect the landscaping. When planning your pool, consider trees and other landscaping. Keep the trees far enough from the pool that you won’t need to worry about roots or leaves for maintenance.
- Start planning early for your pool. Plan early and realistically for your pool. Start your planning as soon as possible with a professional to ensure your pool is ready when you want it.
- Don’t overlook boundaries and zoning laws. When planning custom pools, one of the first stops you (or your pool builder) will need to make is at the permit office. Don’t let missing permits, disputed boundary lines, or zoning problems bring your custom pool to a halt.
- Think about safety needs. Consider the safety needs of pets, children and adults in your home when designing your pool. No matter the age group using your pool, safety should be a top priority.
