Salt Water Pools: The Basics

The biggest draw to salt water pools is that there is much less chlorine that traditional pools. For those who have sensitive skin and eyes, salt water pools are the perfect option. Many salt water pool owners also claim that the water leaves their skin feeling soft, without the chemically smell.

A few misconceptions about salt water pools are:

  • Salt water pools will be too salty. If you have not swam in a salt water pool before, you may think that it would be similar to the level of saltiness in the ocean. This is not the case. Salt water pools don’t reek of salt, and it won’t sting your eyes if you get a little water in them like the ocean.
  • Salt water pools are unsanitary. Some may be under the misconception that salt water pools are full of germs because of the lack of chlorine. This, however, is untrue. Salt water pools use electrolysis to create chlorine to sanitize the water.
  • Salt water pools are high maintenance. Salt water pools are about the same amount of maintenance as traditional pools. Some even argue that salt water pools are less maintenance than traditional pools because of how the salt cells produce chlorine only when needed.
